The Gold Souk in Deira is the UAE's most famous place to buy gold, visited by tourists and residents of every nationality. Here is a short guide before you go.
Location and getting there
- The souk is in the Al Ras area of Deira, near Dubai Creek.
- Nearest metro stations: Gold Souq and Al Ras on the Green Line, a few minutes' walk away.
- You can also cross the creek by traditional abra from Bur Dubai.
- There are multi-storey car parks near the Gold Souk Extension.
The original souk and the extension
The original souk is a set of covered lanes lined with gold shops. The Dubai Gold Souk Extension, at Hind Plaza on Al Khor Street across from the old souk, has about 295 shops plus restaurants, exchange houses and bullion dealers. It opens daily from 10am to 10pm, with longer hours in festive seasons.
What you will find
Jewellery in 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K, gold bars and coins, diamonds and gemstones, and Gulf, Indian and Italian designs.
How to negotiate
- The raw gram rate is almost fixed because it follows the daily rate, so there is little point negotiating it.
- Negotiate the making charge. Ask for it in dirhams per gram and compare two or three shops.
- Open this page on your phone to check today's gram rate before you walk into a shop.
